Wedding Bell Blues

As part of my job, I post the engagement/wedding/anniversary announcements on the Courier-Post website on Thursdays. It’s a nice change of pace from my usual task list of:

Download ads, schedule ads, track down missing ads.

It also is slowly eroding my “Marriage is an outdated societal institution that exists to turn a profit” attitude of the last five years.

What cracks me up about the listings is all too often you can tell whose family wrote the announcement.

For example:

Announcement has been made of the engagement of John Doe and Jane Smith, both of Anytown, NJ.

Jane is the daughter of Rob and Mary Smith. She was Little Miss Anytown in 1992, graduated first in her class at Anytown High, and went on to graduate summa cum laude with a degree in chemical engineering from Anytown University. She’s currently a senior chemical engineer at AnytownChemCo and spends her spare time working in Anytown Soup Kitchen or playing with her gorgeous nieces Emmaleeigh and Soffieyiah.

John works with cars.

I got married 12 years ago today. And even though it was so long ago and it’s over now, each minute of this day I can remember what I was doing at that very time 12 years ago.

Which is cruel. It really is. It’s not fair that the memories of “what went wrong” fade while the memories of “how good it was” persist until the whole experience becomes a gorgeous sepia-toned Hallmark commercial, y’know?

And I wasn’t even going to write this because half of the people in my life reads this blog and it then gets fed over to my Facebook where the other half who don’t read my blog can read it. But this is my diary. This whole site is a sham if I hold back.

The pisser is that I’m happy now! I could see me being bummed if I were living in a cardboard box with only a mangy cat, but life is good. So I get angry at myself for being sad about something that’s water under the bridge.

Bah. Even the weather today was spot-on.

Bah.

7th Wedding Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary to Thor and me!

There have been a lot of great times sprinkled with some sad times and some difficult times. But I’m happy. And he is too. So I think I’ll renew the lease on my marriage for another year.

The sun is JUST rising now – darn Daylight Saving time. I miss the joy of having the sun greet me at 5:30 am when my alarm goes off. Then again, now I get the privilege of laying here in bed and watching the sun rise. Watching a sunrise recharges my soul.

Reasons why today will suck:

I’m out of the office at a seminar tomorrow and Wednesday — so all reports have to be done today.

My clothes are strewn ALL over the place — more than usual, I mean. I have no idea what I’m wearing or where it is.

In a fit of optimism, I told Mom I’d meet her at the gym at 5:45. The gym!

We’re having technical issues with the Courier-Post website that I’m still having to hash out. I notice them. 99% of people won’t. My email box will be fat with emails from the 1% who did notice, and assume that I have no idea what’s going on with my own site.

SOMEBODY in this apartment turned the heat off last night. It feels like 50 degrees in here.

Edited on 9/20/08 to add: So I’m going back through my posts to give them all titles, which has taken me over a year to do. And I read this. Just so you know, he first asked for the divorce 4 months after I wrote this.
