Chief Diva in charge

In a terrifying turn of events, I was put in charge of the office while most of our coworkers are gone at our organization’s Annual meeting. One of our Drexel Co-ops made this sign for me, which makes it official.

Abbreviated to CDC. Like the Center for Disease Control. Fitting

Abbreviated to CDC. Like the Center for Disease Control. Fitting

My duties are very important. They are:

1) Make sure lunch is ordered & delivered for the Left Behinders today (Qdoba), tomorrow (sandwiches) and Friday (pizza).
2) Help with the decorating. Another of the Co-ops’ responsibilities is decorating the office to welcome back the Annual Meeting group. There is a theme, which I cannot disclose at the moment.
3) Ensure that we don’t inadvertently burn the office down.

I think I got this.

PS: Happy birthday to my Wandering Minstrel!

San Francisco

I was fortunate enough to go to San Francisco on a trip for work in the middle of November. I’ve been there twice before and loved it. San Francisco’s my “runaway” city. If I hit the Powerball and disappear, that’s where you can start looking for me.

Since the last time I was there I was … blue … I was more than excited when the opportunity arose to go back! Unfortunately, the short business trip + jet lag meant that I didn’t go touring around as much as I wanted to, but I saw some things. On someone else’s dime!

Meals of note:
First Crush: Had the scallops and a “Rhone Ranger” wine flight.
Le Colonial: If you click through, you’ll see the lovely outdoor area that we sat in. French-Vietnamese being a new cusine for me, I had Cà Ri Tôm (Coconut curry prawns with eggplant, shiitake mushroom, mango, potato, yellow onion and basil), and we split an order of spring rolls and an amazing plate of fried rice. And wine. I had more wine.
Jasper’s: Met some friends of my manager’s there – had a delicious plate of fish & chips, gourmet deviled eggs and … yes, more wine.

Touristy things:
I went out to see the Bay Bridge lights and they were just as gorgeous as I imagined. I also got to stroll through Chinatown. Our hotel (and the convention center) were in the Financial District so I didn’t have a chance to venture far. That’s okay. The weather was GORGEOUS and perfect for short walkabouts.

We also went to Johnny Foley’s to watch the dueling pianists, and it was a rollicking raunchy good time. I think I had wine there, too.

I’m thankful for a job that allows me to go places other than McLean, VA and Asbury Park, NJ.

Photos:
I’m still wrangling with photo galleries. Bear with me.

Friday Five: Lights

Rabbit Rabbit!

I can’t believe it’s March already. The last 2 weeks at work have been a bit stressy. Mind you, it’s still only 1/15th as stressy as the OLD job, but it was still crazy. Which is why I blinked and 2 weeks went by without blogging. Sacrilege!

I’m home today – took a mental health day. (So of course, Stampy’s parental figure is hammering things upstairs.) I wanted to bake, but we have no eggs. I wanted to clean, but I’m still in my pajamas and obviously typing away at the computer. So I think I’m going to have some girl scout cookies and a second cup of coffee. I’m still ridiculously blue – have been for a few months now. Maybe it’s lack of sunlight, maybe it’s middle age. If I’m still blue by the end of March maybe I’ll do something about it. ‘Til then, I’m hermity.

I have some travel coming up – a trip to San Francisco in the middle of April for TNP. Wait, you’re looking for volunteers to go to San Francisco, company-paid? Twist my arm, why don’t you? My manager and I are going to staff a booth at a conference. I’m also going to see how much sourdough bread I can eat in 4 days.

WM and I also going to Walt Disney World (again^15). No, I never get tired of it. Maybe when I’m older, I’ll grow out of it, but … (checks driver’s license). Nah, never growing out of it.

And in June, I’m going with the lovely Katie to see NKOTB in concert. Yes, that’d be New Kids on the Block. They have an album coming out on April 1 (already pre-ordered) and a single called “Remix,” where they tell me I was a loser with glasses in high school but now I’m hot. Stay tuned for my response song called: “Keep Sucking In That Gut, Guyz.”

Here’s this week’s Friday Five! Today’s topic is “Lights.”
1. Where’s a good place to check out some pretty lights?
Walt Disney World at night.

soooooooooooon

Fountain. Epcot. No big.

2. How well do you sleep with the lights on?

I am a world-champion sleeper. Anytime, anywhere, dark or light. It’s my one natural talent. Put me anywhere in a semi-reclined state and in 15 minutes I can be out like a light for hours.

3. What’s your favorite song with the word “light” or “lights” in the title?
I searched my iTunes library for a song with the word “light” in the title. Here are my results:

Note to those who knew me when: I still like crummy music.

Note to those who knew me when: I still like crummy music.

Yep, I still loves me the middle-brow, common-denominator pop music. So I guess I’ll go with Hunger for the Great Light. Dave Matthews calls me a dirty girl in it. (reads the rest of the lyrics) Yeah. It’s that song. Definitely. Whoo!

4. What “light” version of some food or drink is as good as (or better than) its regular version?
I have always preferred Diet Coke to regular Coke. I also like it better than Coke Zero. I tried to give up soda a few months back, but all I managed to do was scale it back to once a week, maximum. That works for me.

5. Which light in your house seems to need changing the most frequently, and which the least?

The light bulbs in the ceiling fixtures need changing most, because they are hardest to get to, naturally. Least ofen is the bulb in my nightstand lamp by my bed. I don’t read in bed anymore. (see answer 2)

Dreaming of Putin

Happy Friday! This begins a three-day weekend for me as TNP is closed on Monday. Not much on the docket other than having Mom’s birthday dinner.
george
This week I brought my own meal 3 days, ate a work-provided lunch one day, and got a lunch from the cafeteria today. I also ate my own breakfast every day. Two days this week I did 40 minutes worth of walking and today I walked about 25 minutes. As you might be able to tell over the last few weeks, I’m trying to save money by eating my own food at work, and get some more low-impact movement into my life.

Friday means it’s also time for the Friday Five. This week’s topic is critcism.

1. How well do you receive criticism?

I take criticism like a frightened puppy. My yearly review is coming in a few weeks and I’m pretty nervous. But what are you going to do? I think I did a good job this year, but I know there are places I need to improve. I’ll sign the paper and move on. But the thought of listening to my weaknesses for an hour and seeing them on paper … ugh. No thanks.

2. When did someone else’s criticism of you result in growth?

Years ago, I worked in the Junior’s Department at JCPenney. My manager told me one day never to wear white tights as an adult, because they make your legs look bigger and because white tights are a very little-girl thing to wear. That made me the fashion mogul I am today. (eyeroll)

You really can’t say anything to me that would result in personal growth that I don’t already know. If I’m not already making strides to grow where I already need growth, you’re not automatically going to make me change. It sounds self-centered, but it’s true. I believe too many people think they’re being helpful by being critical, as if I’m going to have a moving Hallmark moment if you tell me I need to work on my confidence when speaking front of a group. No poop! Really? I NEVER knew I had no confidence speaking in front of a group. I thought everyone had nausea and shaking, sweating hands!

In other words, I believe people use the phrase “constructive criticism” when there really is no constructive part. They just want to criticize.

Yeesh, that was rambly.

3. What do you think of film critics?

I’m not a movie person, but if somebody likes movies I think being a film critic has to be a darn cushy job for them. Me? Three and a half hours in a dark chilly theater with a bunch of strangers and an hour of ads ain’t my thing and I’d probably give all the movies 2 stars.

4. What’s something you’d like to make a critical statement about right now?

The people on the Carnival Cruise ship that was just towed to shore. Sure, your vacation literally stunk. You were looking forward to it for a long time and you are disappointed. And I feel ya, even though I never stayed on a literal poopdeck. But really…you’re getting your money back, plus more money to spend on Carnival if you so choose. You weren’t in danger. The boat was stinking, not sinking. I saw a photo of someone kissing the ground in Alabama and my eyes haven’t rolled back since.

So when I read that a Texan woman said the cruise was like the Hunger Games … yeeeeeeeeeeeah, no.

I didn’t read the Hunger Games or see the movie, but I’m pretty sure Katniss wasn’t given hamburgers or a fluffy bath robe. And I’m positive that the children on the ship weren’t killing each other for sport.

Hey Carnival! Have a sale on cruises!

5. Who’s the most critical person you know?

(smirks)

I had a dream last night that troubled me. It wasn’t a disturbing dream on the surface, but rather I was disturbed by what I had said.

Let’s say that in my dream I’m in bed with Vladmir Putin. I roll over and say dreamily to him, “In your arms, I feel like a musical instrument that’s finally being played by a true virtuoso.” We drink some Fruit Loop vodka and pull up the covers.

That was not the dream I had, nor was it a dream that I have EVER had, nor was it remotely similar to the dream I had. But the words I spoke in my real were mine, so I’m disturbed that somewhere in my weird brain I would have thought of saying what I said. Ergh. I just have to file last night’s non-Putin dream away with the dreams I’ve had of owning a flock of geese or fighting insurgents in the Pinelands. They’re not actual wishes…just mindless brain entertainment.

Have a happy weekend!
