Stupid Beading Tricks: Earrings for Coworkers and Election Day woes.

Happy Election Day! We voted a little after 7am and then got coffee and a donut at Dunkin’ Donuts to celebrate. There was no line and we received no stickers. I have never received a sticker for voting. Eh, no big. In other Election Day news, I am staying off of Facebook for a few days. When I made a plan this morning to post a picture of agreen “X” illuminated next to Roseanne Barr’s name just to piss off everyone there (“Hey, guys, I listened to ALL of you and voted for candidate that NONE of you trashed! Click “Like” plx!) I realized I needed a break.

In the meantime, I’ve made a few earrings for my coworkers.

“CC Rider” — beads wrapped around a circle frame with a Swarovski dangle in the middle. My first foray into ombre.

“Life’s a Beach” – featuring shell drops by Lillypilly Designs.

“Griffith Lane” – I handmade the teardrop frames. I swear the middle bead on each earring are the same color. There’s an AB finish on one side.

My NaNoWriMo Novel Permanently Shelved is trucking along. I’m still on track to finish on time and will break the 10,000 word mark today!

Stupid Beading Tricks: Sorting

I haven’t managed to create ONE stupid thing since before the wedding. I blame married life for sapping away all of my creativity. And the more I look at beading sites and Pinterest, the more I think I’m a talentless hack.

So to reacquaint myself with my beads, I decided to clean up my trays. Meaning, sort them by color. Every. Bead.

Fact: Every Facebook status is funnier if you fit in the word “slobbering.”

It’s taken me about 2 1/2 weeks, but I’m finished. And I now have 5 color trays instead of 4. :)

Purple, blue, green & yellow

Red, pink, orange, brown

Black, white, and 3 shades of gray.

WM heads back to school tomorrow. I’m very thankful and grateful that he has a job to go back to. This is in mostly due to Governor Pancakes-(R) frightening a bunch of teachers into retirement. My feelings on this are very mixed. Because we knew he had a job to go back to, our summer was laid-back and worry free. If you’re keeping track, this was our first worry-free summer. Here’s to many more.

Stupid Beading Tricks: Adventures in Polymer Clay

Have you ever seen polymer clay beads? They’re absolutely beautiful! And there is NO shortage of tutorials online that show you how EASY it is to make your OWN beads!

Make my OWN beads? Okay!

Which is how I found myself with three blocks of Sculpey clay and a free afternoon.

I took 1/4 of each package (chocolate, turquoise, pearl) and rolled them into long rolls, called canes. Then what you’re supposed to do is cut the original cane into thirds, fourths, fifths (or whatever), combine them into a new cane and then use a razor to slice them into lovely beads. Poke a hole in them, bake’em for 15 minutes and you have beads! Of your very own!

Right.

My first mistake was getting the colors twisted around when I was rolling my canes. So I didn’t have a pretty symmetrical inside to my bead. Whatever. I love the combination of brown, blue & white so I was happy to have these beads no matter what. And they looked a bit like brown & turquoise camouflage.

My second mistake was underestimating HOW MANY BEADS come from 3/4 of a block of sculpey. About 12 slices into this project I could feel my happy mood deflating.

See the cane in the foreground? I still had that many to cut.

My third mistake was not letting the beads settle and cool down a bit before trying to poke the holes. Because of that, the beads got all smushy when I tried to push my safety pin through, and some of the beads have enough of my fingerprints in them that you could use them to implicate me in any crime you want.

This is the project that never ends. Yes, it goes on and on my friends.

And my final mistake, which was actually mistake .5 (mistake zero being THINKING THAT I COULD MAKE BEADS IN THE FIRST PLACE) was purchasing the pearl clay instead of white. Sculpey pearl, when baked, turns into a glittery translucent white, which really muddied up the final color of the beads. Having a pure white would have made them look crispier. Unfortunately, I discovered mistake .5 after spending two and a half hours slicing and poking clay, and 15 minutes baking the devil beads.

This is what it sounds like when crafters cry.

So now I have a bunch of off-shaped, fingerprint-filled and muddy looking beads. Do you have somebody you hate? I can make you earrings for them! Gifts of spite! (As long as they’re not the type to commit a crime and use the beads to create latex molds of my fingerprints to use on gloves)

My takeaways from this? Never trust the internet. And just buy beads.

Does anyone want 3/4 of a block of chocolate, turquoise and pearl Sculpey?

First paid day off!

TNP’s fiscal year ends on 6/30. By the end of June I’ll have accrued 6 vacation days. There’s a great policy in place where you can roll up to 5 vacation days into the next year. I’ll be taking advantage of that so I won’t have to borrow days from the year ahead for our July honeymoon.* So I knew I had 1 day to blow before 6/30.

I didn’t know I had also been given 2 personal days that can’t be rolled over and have to be used before 6/30. And other than the comp day from my New Orleans trip, I haven’t taken a day off since I started! And that’s how I ended up here this morning:

Note the small dog who takes up most of the bottom half of my chair.

(After 6 years I finally have an outside seating area again. I also have a tomato plant, a basil plant and an oregano plant out here that you can’t see. I’m beyond tickled at that.)

At the old job I had to take off at least a day a month to stay sane. BUT…I am still flaking out on canceling my subscription. I guess I’m just a sentimental softie after all.

did someone say soft?

So what do I do with this blank day yawning ahead of me? Laundry? Clean the bathroom? Sweep the floor? Psht.

Maybe I’ll get an audio version of Fifty Shades and create a gray necklace. You know, beat two birds with one flogger?

*gah!
