Another bullet dodged

neo-dodging-bullets

I dodged another bullet…I survived this round of layoffs. This is round 3 for those of you who were counting and like the other two times, it was a very stressful and sad sad sad day.

On the other hand, I’m very pleased that Kim 4.0 doesn’t entail my wearing ziploc bags on my feet and pushing a cart filled with cats down the street.

It’s starting to become clear to me that my future isn’t going to be with my current employer. (Blog readers: DUH!) It’s also becoming clear that I’m not qualified for any web job out there. While I’ve struggled to become familiar with PHP, MySQL and Flash, web jobs now require a veritable alphabet soup of programming languages that I just don’t think I can master. (Took a Ruby on Rails “seminar” at work a few months back. Learned NOTHING. And my brain cracked like the Liberty Bell. Seriously!)

So taking my fantastically useful degree in RADIO & TELEVISION (I could slap 19-year-old me for taking that major) and my very basic web skills I can be a…a… Social Media Expert? Online Media Adviser? Professional blogger?

Need to give this more thought.

In the meantime, I need to catch up on about a week’s worth of sleep.

Thank you for all the good thoughts and prayers and wishes. They are so very much appreciated. Hugs!

Well, take some time to think about things. I did when I got the ax and although I didn’t accomplish much, it was nice just to sit back and think of what could be. I also rode my bike like a madman to the beach a few times just to clear my mind of what had just happened. Great therapy.

Hang in there. You’ve got the brains–as cracked as they might be–to carry yourself to something good. I’m still looking for something better but the market is horrible now. Things will get better. They have to.

    Phew! Bullet dodging is stressful.

And for whatever it’s worth, I say forget Ruby on Rails and Flash and all that and just become a WordPress ninja. Being able to set up a really kick ass WordPress site — i.e. learning to use the software to act like more of a CMS than blog tool — is all you’d need to create 90 % of the websites that small businesses need. You could manage to have a pretty phenomenal web shop based on WP development alone.
