Redemption

I’ve been with my company for almost 8.5 years. And I’ve received my share of awards (pride goeth before a fall, cocky Kim of 2004!) and accolades in the past. Even a promotion.
Almost two years ago I hit control-alt-delete on my career and — much to the bewilderment of my managers and the other higher-ups — gave up the management job that I was promoted to. It just wasn’t a good fit for me at that point in time. So I took a backseat role in our department and have been happy ever since. But when I did that, I resigned myself to the fact that I committed career suicide. That I’d be blacklisted from the range of honors and awards that are doled out here on a regular basis.
So when the email arrived last week telling me I was nominated for Employee of the Quarter, I did a double take. Me? Really? I read it again. I really *was* nominated for Employee of the Quarter! The winner gets a parking spot, a jacket, a nice sum of cash, and a chance to be Employee of the Year.
The reception for the 14 nominees was at 4pm. They read a nice passage about each of us who won and I was shocked to learn that I was nominated twice…once with Coworker Sharon for the groundbreaking work we’re doing in Advertising and once with Coworkers M and S for our work together on the new redesign. Then, the publisher announced the winner.
Rather, winners. Somebody from Circulation won for her great work w/our Customer Service department.
And …
Our 3-person web redesign group won too!!!
I very nearly burst into tears.
The money, the jacket, the baseball cap and the parking spot are fantastic
But I received a prize that trumps them all….
The knowledge that, again, I am good at what I do.

good for you.
i found out today that i was NOT “short-listed” for the distinguished teaching award.
at least ONE of us is good at what they do. >:(
Kim – Fantastic News. Much congratulations – very well deserved.
Wow – outstanding! Congratulations. Of course, I’ve LONG known of your brains and capable-ness, so I express little surprise.
And to think I knew you when………working in a cubicle in “where is that” Glou Cty. Congrats!!
Congratulations!
And of course you’re good at what you do. You should have never doubted that.
Well done you!!! Well deserved.
Congrats! That’s awesome. Employees that stick around for more than a few years are truly hard to come across, so this is indeed well-deserved!
About the only thing I ever got at any job was when I worked for Best Buy. I was Employee of the Week (or Hour, I dunno) and got–if you can believe this–a Best Buy-branded MagLite. I still have it, BTW
