One more win, Phillies! I want a parade!

(I did a site search to see if I told you this story yet. I couldn’t find it, so apologies if this is the 2nd time.)

In 1980, the Phillies won the World Series. I was in grade 3, and my brother was 10 months old. The whole region was ecstatic. And there was going to be a parade! I really wanted to go and see Pete Rose and Tug McGraw. Other kids were being pulled out of school to go. But Mom gently told me no – my brother was too small to take into Philadelphia. But the next time the Phillies won the World Series, she’d take me.

I was bummed, but it was a fair enough proposition to an 8-year-old. Next time, I’ll see the parade.

And here we are…28 freaking years later. I’m frown with a job and a place of my own. I’m older now than Mom was in 1980. Pete Rose is banned from baseball* and Tug has passed on. And the Phillies are ONE WIN away from a parade. ONE WIN!

I already told (new) Boss that I WILL take off from work on the day of the parade. I don’t know or care who can or can’t come with me. I’m going to make my way to Broad Street and see the show. I can’t wait another 28 years.

I haven’t been more vocal about the Phillies because I’m just afraid I’ll jinx something and they’ll lose.

So let’s hope that by the end of the week, there’ll be Phillies parade pictures here! :)

Happy Monday!

*What a crock of crap that is, by the way. You have football and basketball players who get into and out of legal trouble ALL THE TIME and they’re welcomed back with open arms. Pete gambled, never betting against his own team, and he’s out.

I’m still worried. I mean, this is Philadelphia and these are the Phillies. I was by their side on the magical ride in 1980. I had my heart ripped out by Joe Carter and Mitch Williams in 1993. And let’s not forget 1987 – no not the Phillies, but the Flyers and when Ron Hextall stood on his head and kept the Flyers alive in the Stanley Cup only to lose in seven games till Edmonton. Basically, I’m taking the cliche one game at a time. But what a feeling it would be if the Phillies do bring the title back to Philly.

Very cool story. I hope that for the sake of yourself and your mom, the Phils do it. Ann was fortunate enough to see the Angels’ parade in 2002 when it was hosted by Disney’s California Adventure because we had our Annual Passes, but I was stuck working that day so I missed out.

As far as Charlie Hustle goes, I’m right there with you. It’s a shame that the man who once said that he’d “walk through Hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball” has been snubbed for life. I damn near cried when he was on the field a few years ago for a pre-game introduction (for the All-Time Greats IIRC), the crowd roaring “PETE!” The man put energy into the game that you don’t see much these days. Oh, and I remember watching him get some kind of record, too. And I hear he has a few more.

BTW….I love Pete Rose, but I’ll put a shameless plug on how Pete Rose let me down. Check out this post from L.A. Scene when I saw Pete Rose in of all places – Las Vegas. Pete really let me down that day….and I just can’t move past it.

Of course, they WOULD do this in a Presidential election season, when days off at work in the week before Election Day are NOT an option. So no parade for me.

BUT I’m not above shamelessly using you as an imaginary proximity relay for my rooting, so: Oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please oh please… just one more, guys. (Well, half-of-one more, at this point. Suspended?!?!)

Sorry about last night Kim. Hopefully better news this week.

    See? I jinxed it all!

  • Tommy Says:

It’s never Sunny in Philadelphia. Nothing comes easy for us. I don’t think you jinxed us….it’s just part of what we Philly fans go through.
