Dream
Posted January 29th, 2008 by Kimberly DowdI’m a champion sleeper. I fall asleep quickly without fuss, and I have amazing dreams. Here was last night’s:
I’m living alone, but with my current zoo of pets. My apartment is set up differently – I’m on the ground floor and the units are all in a row. There’s a fuss outside, and in the sky I see beautiful polygonal spheres of light. The spheres are color changing, and they begin to descend. Once they hit the ground, they take off at high speed and destroy the buildings in front of them, like a bowling ball down an alley. I realize then that these spheres are actually extraterrestrial bombs, and we are being attacked by an alien race.
With my proximity to Philadelphia, I know I need to leave. I find a leather bag and gather supplies: a knife, some butane candle-lighters, a few cans of soup, some bottles of water, a magnifying glass, and a blanket. I grab a leather coat and a wide brimmed hat to take along.
Then I look at the pets. Immediately I know that I cannot bring them all, so I drag out the large bag of cat food, slit it down the side, and dump it on the floor. Then I fill up every container I have with water. I kiss my cats goodbye, nuzzling their ears as I do so. I get the dogs on their leashes and leave, knowing that the dogs would learn to hunt squirrels, and if things go wrong, I could kill them for food.
My plan is to ride this all out in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I steal a bicycle (in my dream, it has a basket big enough for both dogs to fit comfortably) and find the last ATM standing. I take out all of my cash and head eastward.
I have these dreams often: the sole survivor dreams. In these dreams: 1) there is always an apocalyptic event; 2) I am completely alone; 3) I never panic. I’m very methodical and levelheaded and confident that I will survive; 4) I’m very cold. I’ll steal and kill if it means I survive another day.
Someday I should look at a dream interpretation book or site…there’s just so much going on in these dreams that all of the ‘meanings’ would probably contradict.

Wow. I’m envious. I’ve never had that dream, as much as I love all things post-apocalyptic (books, movies, the episode of the Twilight Zone where Burgess Meredith breaks his glasses…)
I think once the dust settled and the murderous bands of survivors and mutants dispersed… an apocalypse would be really relaxing.

I have 2 recurring dreams. In the one, I’m on vacation with family and friends. Something always goes wrong like the car breaks down or the flight is postponed so that by the time we arrive, we only have 1 day to enjoy ourselves. I’m the only bothered by this, and everyone drags their feet so we lose even more time. By the time I actually get to do anything, everyone is telling me I have an hour to enjoy myself; the place (like Disney) is always packed so I end up with getting to do 1 thing. The line is always long, so just as I get to the front of it, someone in my party grabs me and says I have to leave RIGHT NOW to go home. So I end up having everything ruined.
The second is me always being chased by murderers; they’ve gotten everyone around me (I was forced to witness their murders) and I’m running for my life, but they’re catching up….
Waking up is always a relief! Even on a work day!

My goodness that is eventful. You must be exhausted when you wake up!!!

For the longest time, I had what I’d call “musical dreams” in which my mind would create songs. The problem was that I’d pretty much forget everything when I woke up, save for a few lyrics or melodies. I can’t read sheet music but can play stuff by ear on the keyboard. My wife calls me “one of those people.”
I also had a dream where I was carrying a backpack filled with unknown contents. I was just walking and out of nowhere, I was approached by a man and shot on the spot. Since we don’t die in dreams, I woke up a bit shaken. That dream was a wake-up call to lose weight as if I didn’t I would no doubt be dead long before my time.

The post-apocalyptic dream I keep having ends up with with me and a few friends taking over a Home Depot type store that just happens to be in the middle of nowhere. Block the entrances with a couple semi-trucks, weld all the exterior doors shut but one, start growing the veggies in the gardening department. So I guess in my dreams I just like doing lots of manual labor, maybe I should be doing more in real life.
