A holiday public service announcement

26 Nov

Parents! You’re great and your kids slay me with cuteness. But…

Now that the holidays are upon us, please TRY and refrain from telling me (and others without kids) that:
1) Christmas is for children
2) The holidays are nothing without children to share them with
3) Before children, you really didn’t know the joy of the holidays.

Trust me, I know this. Every Christmas (and Mother’s Day) I struggle inwardly with the choices I made in the past that brought me where I am now. I whine that my clock is ticking, but, as usual, now is NOT the time to toss the pills. My Christmas will be wonderful.

But yours will be better.

I know.

Don’t get too caught up in that, Kim. While kids definitely add to the joy of the holidays, they also add lots more work, food, gifts, cards, etc. They do take it to another level but it’s also quite tiring–and expensive.

I’ve always enjoyed Christmas and always will. It brings back those few memories of my long-gone father, who freaking LOVED Christmas. So enjoy the holidays, and I hope to catch some Cookie-Cam 2008 :)

Forgive me if I’m out of line, but whoever told you 1, 2, & 3 was selfish, inconsiderate, and in all probability, trying to make themselves feel better.

    My formal rebuttals:
    1) Christmas is for EVERYONE. Last I checked, no one had a monopoly on the spirit of the season.
    2) The holidays are only nothing if you have nothing to give. Love is Love no matter what the age of the person you share it with.
    3) Joy is not dependent on kids. There’s joy everywhere if a person is open enough to find it.

After reading all the things you’re thankful for, I’d say you’re well loved by the people around you. Don’t let other people with a chip on their shoulder or a sense of self-importance steal that from you!

Sorry for the rant. I just don’t like it when other people say hurtful things out of ignorance or insensitivity. (And I hear it a lot from people who don’t necessarily agree with my chosen path in life.)

    Blessings!
